2021 - its bad and good

Well, I would have thought 2020 with the lockdown and the drastic changes in lifestyle would be bad enough. But for our family, 2021 was even worse. We have lost 2 very important persons, the family membership living under the same roof (including helpers) was downsized from 5 in the beginning of the year to only 2 now, while the cat population shrunk from 3 to 2. It would take time for us (myself and a helper) to get used to the number of empty beds and space, to buy and prepare less food, the quietness etc.

For the cats, like us, they too have to undergo the change. Initially they were quiet and less active, but with each other's company (human and cat), they seem to be adjusting well. I guess, as long as they are being well taken care of, to them life continues. They seem to have fun, sleeping in different places at different time - they know where to go to as they desire - to be pampered, time for solitude, time to eat and play etc.

On the contrary, 2022 will be a whole new chapter for me and the kids. What we have learnt and those precious memories will never fade, but will continue to ignite our quest for what the Lord has laid out for us in faith, hope and joy!

I would like to take this opportunity, to thank all of you for your blessings and encouragement during those difficult moment. They are all warmly treasured!

I would find no better way to end this year's blog, by paying a tribute to my beloved daughter, Goldie -- I miss you dearly -- your never ageing appearance, charisma, understanding and thoughtfulness, warmth and above all your love to the whole family!    THANK YOU, DEAR !

I'm back.....

Felix returned to the show ring on 5th December, after over a 3 year break because of his liver/bile problem. We decided to participate as its a small 1 day show, so pressure should be acceptable. Besides, its a good bye present to Auntie Zellen, who took good care of him since he came to our family.

We didn't realize time passed so quickly. At 5 years 8 months, we thought he is at the prime of age. But in the show, he is the second most senior, and within his group, he is the oldest. But has he lost his charisma?

We found he has improved a lot. Though a bit frightened during the first ring, as he tried to walk out of the stage, other than that he just let it be. In the second ring, he is a lot calmer, and energetic. He sat up straight and paid more attention to the surrounding.

While waiting/resting in his shelter, he seemed very much at home - nosy, walked and looked around and even poke his head out. Ate dry cat food a few times (not 1 or 2 pieces, but over 15 pieces) and even drank some water. Initially, he slept well only when my hand touches him, but at the latter part of the day, he just nap on his own.

Unfortunately, Felix's appeal doesn't fit the taste of local judges, but in our mind, he's the winner in his own right - he has grown and mature. So, this day's effort is not wasted, but its unlikely he will be back in the ring regularly.

The inevitable.....

Surgery to remove the tumor in the chin was successfully done,

But, the Lord called upon her .....

The Lord called on Goldie

Goldie brilliantly complete her 17 years and 3 months of earth mission on 9th November, 2021, at 2.25pm.

She shall be sadly missed, but warmly remembered. She brings with her loads of love from earth in her journey to Rainbow Bridge.

Dearest Goldie,

How are you? How was your journey to Rainbow Bridge? Have you met grandpa, grandma and Kitty? How did you feel when you woke up? Please don’t worry about us. Just start your new life there in joy, freedom, good health and happiness.

Goldie, you are special - you are the first cat that I own. We met in a pet shop in Causeway Bay and together we spent close to 17 years living under the same roof. In the planning stage, to keep Kitty company, the family decided to have a MALE Exotic Shorthair, NOT red and white in color for we once had a cat of this color (Shing Shing). However, my basic requirements were not met at all. At that time, I only came across a red and white tabby (who is you) and a red tabby. In making the purchase decision, grandpa chose you. Of course I didn’t tell him that your had ringworm in parts of your body. I took you to see our family vet Dr Chui before taking you home, he told me to return you to the shop because of the ringworm. I told him, I will not, as our bonding has been established.  On the day of desex operation, I was told that you were a girl. My comment was – sex is irrelevant now. So I strongly believe that its fate that brought us together. You were God’s chosen gift for us and it’s a perfect present!

Thank you Goldie, for teaching me to live life to its fullest despite the hardship. You were a very considerate and tough lady, highly co-operative and tolerant. Since this year, with nasal carcinoma, we knew that countdown had begun. So we took each day as a gift from God. Each night, before going to bed, I would thank you for being with us, and thank the Lord for ensuring you were happy and comfy. You usually would respond with “gulu gulu" sound. Being able to achieve this result was not easy. Your daily routine starts at 3.45am with breakfast, followed by chemo pill and 4 rounds of Chinese medicine till 7.30pm. You took a total of 18 pills daily without a grain of salt. Never, had I seen you lose your temper or made life difficult for both aunties (domestic helper). I guess, like us, we all want quality life together for as long as we could. The professional efforts of Dr. Tint, Dr. Irene and Dr. Jacky were very crucial, dedication by Auntie Zellen and Auntie Rowena, love from the entire family, and above all your drive to press on.

Goldie, you were a very thoughtful and influential lady. You were a perfect role model to both Betty and Felix. Though you all might not be the best of friends, but by and large, you all live under one roof in harmony, with love, care, discipline and respect. You all care about each other in your own subtle way, as often I saw the younger ones would sneakily go to kiss your face when you were asleep. If they occupy your bedding, you would graciously wait.

As an Exotic, I would consider you an energetic and playful kid. You love Mr. Sunshine. When you were young, you run and play a lot until the day I leant that you got heart murmur, and then I tried to slow down on your activeness. Even in recent times, whenever I showed you a toy, you would gently play for a while. I bet you did it to please us, as we were very generous in praising and encouraging you to stay active.

Your life story could go on endlessly… and we were truly grateful that you are you. You were not only cute, adorable, loveable, affectionate, but you really were a tough fighter. In February, I was told that the cancer you got was very aggressive, with only a few months of time left. Luckily, by trial and error, with the appropriate medication and occasional nasal flushing your nasal condition largely remain under control.

However, rupture of a tumor in your chin in July was the turning point. Initially it was swollen with puss. Applying Bonjela and Convenia injection did help a bit but the wound did not heal properly. After doing the FNA (fine needle) in September, things made an abrupt turn for the worst. It grew rapidly and spread to the lymph node. Via CT and FNA, was diagnosed as carcinoma and did not respond to the current medicine mix. So Dr Tint decided to remove both the tumor and lymph node as part of palliative care to ensure your quality life. At the same time, we were fully aware of that this was a risky operation and had to be completed within a short time.

Your pre-operation blood test readings were largely normal. However, upon opening up on the afternoon of 7th November, your blood pressure dropped sharply. Dr Tint quickly finished the operation, but unfortunately had to re-open to retie a blood vessel to prevent further bleeding. Later on, I leant that the medical team in the clinic was worried that they might lose you. Luckily you woke up an hour later with normal blood pressure. Dr Tint stayed up late till he was confident of your stable condition.

On 8th November, we visited you twice. Naturally you look tired, but you still put your paws and chin on Auntie Zellen’s hand. You ate a few spoon of food during lunch time and managed to eat a quarter on a can of wet food for dinner. We were happy with the progress, though we were aware that your blood pressure was still low (improved to over 40 from 30 in the morning).

On 9th November, we visited you at noon time. Your condition seemed to have worsened with fluid in the chest and blood pressure still low (30-40 range). Dr Tint was afraid that your heart was having a problem and he was trying to find the appropriate medical treatment. He assured me that you were only tired, and not in pain or discomfort. You ate 4 spoon of wet food and we decided to revisit you once every 2 hours so that you could eat more. We left the clinic at around 12.45pm and I return to the office. At 2.10pm., phone call from the clinic told me that you had 2 seizures. Dr Tint thought that likely you were slowly fading away. At 2.20pm, another call advised us to come over to see you. The final call at 2.26pm, told us that in the company of Dr Tint and VA Vivian, you completed your earth mission peacefully. Regrettably, Goldie, dear, please forgive us for not being able to be by your side at the final moment.

Goldie, maybe you have heard that I told Dr Tint that I was prepared to let you go if you were suffering. At that instance Dr Tint said it was too early. I’m really sorry that I have missed the golden opportunity to let you have the chin tumor removal operation earlier. Only the Lord would know whether the outcome would be any different. I have always insisted that given your age of over 17, surgery was a very risky act, we knew from one nasal flushing exercise your body condition was unstable. We would only have it when it was a necessity. One important point which I have learnt from this costly experience, was that open wound of tumor could not heal, so should be removed ASAP. My ignorance had likely shortened your life span by 1-2 months. The only slight comfort, if any, was that you would not have to experience the hardship associated with final stage cancer.

Goldie my dear, go in peace. You have graduated with the highest honor! Though we are physically separated, actually you are now even closer to me than before – I carry you in my heart wherever I go, and you are safely and warmly tugged in that special place. Sincerely thank you for being our family member and my daughter for the past 17 years! As always, you are welcome to visit us whenever you want to, our doors are always open! Love you forever! Everlasting fond memories, not only in my mind, but also in those who know you, had loved and care for you!

Both Betty and Felix are also mourning of the loss of you. They both look depressed and are very quiet. The whole family will hand in hand walk out of this sadness, as we know you want us to continue life anew.

I remain your mother forever……

Time to be thankful

Photo taken from website of All Saint Catherdal

After a 2 year wait, on 3rd October, we attended church service to celebrate Saint Francis Xavier's Day. Though less pet/parent attended than before, the atmosphere was still an enjoyable and joyous one.

Before going to church, the children paid a visit to elder brother's apartment for the first time. Goldie was the brightest one -- she came out of the carrier bag once the bag was unzipped. She strolled around the unit and found places for short nap as well.

Betty and Felix took a while to warm up, and was finally being dished out. Luckily, they also made their rounds at ease fairly soon.

Last but not least, Kitty the Angel turn 8 today. Time flies, but precious memories remain. I trust you are well and might have met both grannies by now. Thank you Kitty dear, for continuing to guard and protect us from above. Love you forever!

A belated Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to all our readers

This year, we didn't spent much time taking photos of the kids... too many things happening... But we do want to wish our friends a happy festive season with their family and love ones! Continue to stay safe and healthy!

Felix was pretty depressed after elder brother decided to move back to his own apartment on 11th Sept, as he has completed his duty to take care of both parents. It was at this moment of separation, that I deeply realised he did so much to keep the place running smoothly, and how much he cares about us!

I think he did miss the 3 cats, as he came back a few times each week to feed them. May God bless him and may he stay happy and healthy!

The following video might result in discomfort..... its really insane, right?

Miscellaneous

No particular theme this month, I just plan to update our record on some recent development....

1) We shall return mother's ashes back to nature tomorrow (16th August 2021), putting the graduation ceremony to a close. Though I have finished cleaning up and donated the clothing and related accessories, there are still quite a bit that remains to be done. The probate hearing won't happen till mid-November 2021, so hopefully matters related to her estate would be confirmed and distributed to relevant parties by the end of this year.

So far I have heard mother calling my name once - at 4am on the day prior to her funeral. I jumped up when being called and saw a vague image - an inverted white triangle on the top with a black circle in the lower middle and at the bottom is another white triangle -- my immediate interpretation is mother in her nursing sister uniform and usually when she calls my name, her voice is firm....

My helpers seemed to sense mother's presence more often -- either its the smell of Pak Fa Oil or snoring sound.... haha.... We miss you mummy! You and daddy are welcome back at any time. I hope both of you could find comfort and pride in seeing us continuing life anew!

2) Because Goldie's right nostril was found to be blocked in mid-July, the Oncologist suggested that we widen the nostril. Fortunately, our family vet Dr Tint, took onto this challenge and did a brilliant job. He first did a CT scan to get an idea on the size and location, used mainly nasal flushing to remove as much tissue as he could, assisted by some probing towards the end. He was happy with the result, as he estimated over half of the tissues have been removed.

Goldie recovered well, willing to start eating at the night of operation and back to normal the next day!

Goldie now starts her Metronomic chemo - taking Cuclophosphamide daily with hope to slowdown growth of blood vessels in the tumor, as chemo doesn't work for her.

Her right nostril is blocked, so instead of seeing black color, you see the pink tissue.

Tissues being removed. The big ones came from flushing, the smaller ones loosened when probed

Post operation - both nostrils are functioning normally.

We are truly grateful to Dr Irene, Dr Jacky and Dr Tint for the endless patience, guidance and advise/actions.

3) After 2 weeks of unstable health - suspect to be vomiting/gastroenteritis caused by change in cat litter, Felix return to normal after receiving some Tint Tint magic! No more vomiting and the blood test was perfectly normal. Hurray!!

As an aside, just a few video ..... enjoy!

Goldie turns 17 today!

Reaching 17 years old is not an easy achievement and should be a very happy occasion. However, this year, mummy is unable to celebrate outright with you, but did so in her heart....

" Goldie dear, I wish you lots of joy, love, good health and serenity in the time ahead! Let's not worry about the future, the future will take care of itself!"

Look at Betty's expressions !

Special edition - To my beloved mother

Its a fact in life that all living creatures - big or small, all have a beginning and an end. Like it or not, one must be prepared for the inevitable, so that when the time comes, we will be better prepared to accept the fact with grace and dignity, to the best interest of all parties.  So try to live each day to its fullest in harmony, love, care, joy and be thankful!

I took pictures of the 3 kids before I visited mother, and showed them to her during the visit. Mother was pleased to see them. From kids' expression, seems they could sense the inevitable.

Today is mother's birth date.

Medley

Felix had a day staycation in CityU VMC on 28-29/6/21. After vomiting on Thursday, initially he appeared a bit sick, but slowly return to normal in the evening. On Friday (28/6), during a revisit, found his ALT to shot up to 333 - though the normal upper bound was 150, this was really nothing when compared with his previous records of 5,000-8,000. But for precautionary reasons, the vet suggested to have him under observation for a day. We agreed to it, because if we took him home and found him unwell, the situation could be pretty messy, for his vet's last day of service was that Saturday. This would also give the vet more time to do whatever checking she thinks necessary.

Ultrasound found the stent nicely in place. The biliary duct going up to the stent is a bit swollen at 0.6cm. Possibility that there could be some sludge. Hope antibiotics and Ursosan would work.

Thank you Dr Vera for all the love and care towards Felix since November 2019. Felix had been through a lot of ups and downs, and we are truly grateful that you are always nearby to guide us through our thoughts to find the best solution for Felix. As we always joke that may be one day, Felix will board the plane to visit you in the US!

As for Goldie, we have changed to another Oncologist. She is now taking oral chemo medication to minimize adverse impact on her bone marrow. So far, she seems to be adjusting well, though her right nose condition has worsen a bit - watery at times.

Anyway, her appetite is still good. Nosy and playful at times..... Thanks be to God!

New "Fur-style"

We have no intention of shaving their fur in preparation of the coming hot summer. But had to do so as a last ditch effort to end their part time job of being ringworm carrier.

The whole incident started in September 2020, when Felix had been in and out of hospital for a considerable period of time. He first got ringworm on the right foot. After it healed, got it in his left shoulder. Both spots had healed, but when combing his body for culture, it turned out positive pretty quickly for a few times.

Betty being a medium fur cat, was also found to be a carrier.

After a number of medicated bath, there were no improvement in the culture results. So we waited till early May when the weather starts to get hot to have both of them shaved. Hope that after a few more medicated baths, both would be ringworm free!

Really lucky that Goldie is ringworm free. I suspect its because she wears clothes.

Felix is 5 years old!

Felix, wish you Good Health, Lots of Joy and Happiness in the years to come!

Trust that we are now in the right path to normality, something that for many could be taken for granted, but for us, we can only hope that this could be within reach!

There's no KFC this time, as Felix is not allowed to have chicken. The 2 girls took a small bite of Jollie Bee for the first time and they like it more than KFC. Haha!

As an aside, some recent videos :

No words can express my feelings

Not easy to write this blog! I hope by doing so, it can help straighten my thoughts so that I can face the upcoming challenge with wisdom and courage.

The news came as a shock to us in mid February after doing a CT scan and biopsy, though the signs first appear in January 2021. Goldie is diagnosed with nascal carcinoma. It’s a rare form of cancer and is very aggressive. Though chemo don’t generally work, the Oncologist thinks given that Goldie’s current condition is clinically good (no sign of spreading at the moment), he believes there might be room for trial. Goldie had already had her first chemo (26/2) and taking Chinese medicine to supplement. I just pray that the Lord will guard and protect her, enrich the vets with wisdom, so that she can live the remaining days in love, comfort and happiness.

The Oncologist refused to forecast on her life expectancy, so we will treasure each day as a bonus. Hopefully being swamped with love (from human and pets), she can find the drive to fight on. My only hope is that she lives for herself and NOT for me, as I don’t want her to endure unnecessary pain/discomfort.

Frankly, presently, I’m psychologically better than a few weeks ago, but I know I still need some more time to fully accept this fact. Since it has happened, I can only accept, give her the most appropriate treatment (as per her health condition permits), and be prepared to let go when the time comes. It’s a fact in life - Every living creature has a beginning and an end. When the time comes, it will be sad, but we are privileged be in the same family.
